          Major medical and technological
        
        
          congresses
        
        
          In 2013 major congresses and corporate
        
        
          meetings were held, especially medical and
        
        
          technological, gathering more tan 100,000
        
        
          participants. It is a strategic option of Fira
        
        
          de Barcelona, both from the point of view of
        
        
          business and from the point of view of offering
        
        
          the organisers a wide range of services and
        
        
          contributing to the city’s positioning in the field
        
        
          of business tourism.
        
        
          · 49th Congress of the European
        
        
          Association for the Study of Diabetes
        
        
          (EASD)
        
        
          . It featured top experts in the
        
        
          prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this
        
        
          condition, affecting almost 400 million people in
        
        
          the world, and considered as the main endocrine
        
        
          disease of the 21st century, according to the
        
        
          World Health Organization (WHO). It brought
        
        
          together around 18,000 participants.
        
        
          · Congress of the European Respiratory
        
        
          Society (ERS)
        
        
          . It dealt specifically with the
        
        
          effects of smoking as one of the main causes
        
        
          for pulmonary disease. The congress, already
        
        
          held by Fira de Barcelona in 2010, featured
        
        
          4,300 technical presentations and gathered
        
        
          21,000 pulmonologists and other professionals.
        
        
          · 23rd ENS Annual Meeting
        
        
          . It presented
        
        
          the most significant advances on neurological
        
        
          research and therapy, with special attention
        
        
          to Parkinson, multiple sclerosis, migraines,
        
        
          attention disorder in adolescents, etc. It
        
        
          gathered more than 3,000 participants.
        
        
          Other medical congresses
        
        
          Other events included the International
        
        
          Conference on Innovative Approaches in Head
        
        
          and Neck Oncology, the 35th Semergen National
        
        
          Congress –a congress devoted to Family Care
        
        
          and organised by the Spanish Society of Family
        
        
          and Community Medicine, which brought
        
        
          together 5,000 delegates– and the 24th National
        
        
          Congress on Neonatology and Perinatal Medicine
        
        
          together with the 4rth National Congress on
        
        
          Neonatal Nursing, the most important meeting
        
        
          on this specialty in Spain.
        
        
          Likewise, experts on dermatology and
        
        
          rheumatology from around the world gathered
        
        
          at the event «Progress & Promise 2013», and
        
        
          annual meeting hosted internationally by the
        
        
          Pfizer laboratories with the aim of exchanging
