The year of NFC
The congress served as launch platform for a
series of initiatives based on NFC technology and
grouped under the name of NFC Experience:
By using terminals with this technology, it was
possible to access the venue, eat at the Gran Via
restaurants and buy in more than 2,000 shops in
the city; and even some hotels implemented
NFC room locks.
The Near Field Communication (NFC),
a protocol for wireless communication created
by NXP and Sony for the interaction between
electronic devices at distances of less than
15 centimetres.
In line with this, The Mobile World Capital
Barcelona started an industrial programme focused
on the potential of NFC for the development of a
future digital portfolio, the so-called mWallet, with the
cooperation of some leading companies of the sector.
Mobile World Capital Barcelona is an
initiative to turn Barcelona into a model for
mobile transformation, generating the necessary
conditions to do so, to make an impact in
the territory and to make it the catalyst for
the development and internationalization of
the business fabric. Members of the MWCB
Foundation are the Spanish Ministry of Industry,
the Government of Catalonia, the Barcelona
City Hall, Fira de Barcelona and GSMA, an entity
representing the interests of more than 800
operators and more than 200 companies from the
global mobile ecosystem, and co-organizer of
the Mobile World Congress, fundamental pillar
of the mobile world capital.
