Barcelona International Comic Convention
11-14/April
Montjuïc. 31st event (9th in Fira)
A large attendance, a significant number of
exhibiting companies and entities, and an
impact on the media, have turned the Barcelona
International Comic Show into the event of
popular culture, with a growing involvement of the
audiovisual and interactive leisure industry.
The 2013 event was devoted to superheroes,
and especially to Superman, created by Jerry
Siegel and Joe Shuster and celebrating its
75th anniversary, and to westerns, in view of
the interest raised by films such as Django
Unchained. In relation to this, the exhibition «A
fistful of comics» featured more than 230 pages
of illustrations by different authors on the subject
of the Wild West, and a new space, the Comic
Saloon, which hosted presentations and master
classes on Superhero and Far West cosplay.
The event commemorated the 50th anniversary
of The Exciting X-Patrol and The Avengers, both
created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and devoted
a retrospective to Ambrós, the creator of El Jinete
Fantasma and Chispita, on the occasion of his
100th anniversary.
The space «Humour can’t be cut» showed how
several cartoonists and illustrators have dealt with
the effects of the economic crisis on their work.
Guest participants were Kevin Eastman, creator
of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the French
Manu Larcenet, the Italian Lorena Canottiere,
the Argentinian Liniers and Ariel Olivetti, the
Norwegian Jason, the American Gilbert Shelton,
the British Paul Grist, the German Ralf König,
and the American illustrator of superheroes
Adam Hugues.
The event was supported by the Government
of Catalonia, the Barcelona City Council, the
Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports and
the Diputació de Barcelona.
