One of the main features of the new Alimentaria
event was having all of its offerings under one roof.
For the first time the event was held in the Gran Via
venue, where it enjoyed better logistic and technical
support, more in accordance with its status as one
of the leading food trade shows in the world.
Since its first edition in 1976, the show has made
steady progress in terms of both visitor and exhibitor
numbers. Despite the current recession, 2012 was
a successful year for the show: it hosted more than
3,850 exhibitors, 1,018 of which came from 60
different foreign countries, particularly from the EU,
Latin America, the United States, China, Thailand,
India, Japan and the Middle East; it was visited
by 142,000 professionals, 40,000 of which were
international, and hosted approximately 8,000
meetings, thus confirming its value as a platform
for strategic information, promotion and business
for the sector.
Within Alimentaria’s huge showcase, its different
areas stood out: Congelexpo (frozen foods),
Expobebidas (soft drink, water, ciders, beers and
must), Expoconser (fish and vegetable preserves),
Intercarn (meat and meat products), Interlact (milk
and dairy products), Interpesca (fish and seafood,
aquacultures and farmed fish products), Intervin
(wine and spirits), Multiproducto (varied foods),
Mundidulce (sweets, biscuits and confectionery
products), Restaurama (food and hospitality products
and services), Vegefruit (fresh fruits and vegetables),
Olivaria (olive oil) y Alimentación Ecológica (Organic
food). Worthy of note were also the International
Pavilion and the Autonomous Communities Pavilion.
Innoval’s commitment to innovation highlighted
the efforts of manufacturers to develop and
commercialize more attractive products. More than
140 innovative food products were presented.
Alimentaria is a significant forum for trends in
food, cuisine and gastronomy culture. This was
highlighted by the presence of BCN Vanguardia, the
International Congress of Gastronomy in Barcelona,
which summoned some of the best international
cooks. It hosted the «Chef of the Year» Competition,
devoted to young cooking prodigies and endorsed
by the World Association of Cooks Societies
(WACS). Other significant events were «Vinorum»,
(wine tasting); «España el país de los 100 quesos»
(Spain: country of the 100 cheeses); «La España
de los ibéricos» (Spanish Iberian food products); y
«La España de los aceites» (Spanish olive oils), with
oil tasting sessions and pairing, as well as culinary
workshops, as an introduction to the world of olive
oil. Alimentaria also celebrated the Interpesca
Conference, in which the sessions devoted to the
processing, presentation and consumption of forth
and fifth range products, were of particular interest.
