2011 awards for Innovation and Sustainability,
technical seminars
The show converted the city of Barcelona into
the world capital of the swimming-pool sector,
of wellness and of water facilities, thanks to
the concentration in the Gran Via venue of
the most important firms in the sector, 63%
of which were international, from a total of
22 countries. It welcomed almost 19,000
visitors, 45% of whom were foreigners, from
127 countries, notably France, Italy, the UK,
Sweden, Israel, Turkey, Russia, Germany, the
US and Brazil.
The show provided an opportunity to observe
the sector from close quarters, a sector which
despite the recession is thriving thanks to
exports and to having concentrated on renova-
tion and maintenance of Spain’s existing
stock of swimming pools. With a total of over
1,100,000 units, Spain occupies fourth place in
terms of number of pools and accounts for 7%
of the world market in this sector.
Innovation and sustainability were the key
concepts in the contest for the Piscina BCN 2011
awards. The Innovation prize went to the Davinci
Magnapool System water filter, by the Australian
firm Poolrite Europe, while the Sustainability
prize went to Visendum ecological paving, by
the Spanish firm Comaclara Systems.
The show also hosted the 3rd Ibero-American
Sporting and Recreational Facilities Congress
(Congreso Iberoamericano de Instalaciones
Deportivas y Recreativas), which brought
almost 150 professionals together in
Barcelona. Moreover, a number of technical
seminars were held, attended by 30 speakers
and 350 professionals from home and abroad,
that addressed such issues as the future of
wellness, the situation of the swimming-pool
market in other countries and the safety of
water parks.

seminars
Around 75,000 young recent graduates and
professionals interested in furthering their
studies attended, once again, the Training and
Jobs Week, one of the major rendezvous of this
country’s education world.
Within the framework of the Week, the Education
Fair was the showcase for the wide variety of
higher and university studies available after
Compulsory Secondary Education (Educación
Secundaria Obligatoria - ESO), as well as for
language-learning programmes, organised by
the Spanish Association for Course Promotors
Abroad (Asociación de Promotores de Cursos en
el Extranjero - ASEPROCE).
As a new development, the cycles of Vocational
Training (Formación Profesional - FP), regarded
as one of the best means of access to the labour
market, had a space to themselves, coordinated
by the BCN Vocational Training Foundation,
with the participation of specialised firms and
centres which informed and advised interested
parties about current qualifications in vocational
training and job opportunities.
Among the main attractions of the event was
the ‘Research in Action’ area, organised by
Talència, the Generalitat institution devoted to
fostering research in the scientific field, and
the multimedia area of the Image and Multi-
media Technology Centre of the Polytechnic
University of Catalonia (Universitat Politècnica
de Catalunya - UPC).
As in previous editions, the fair placed at
students and their families’ disposal the
Student Attendance Service, where Educaweb
experts advised them as to the type of training
best suited to their preferences and aptitudes.
Parallel to this, the Education Department of
the Generalitat and the Interuniversity Council
offered informative sessions and personalised
guidance services to settle doubts as regards
the academic itinerary one may follow after
having passed the university entrance exam,
the Bologna Plan or available grants and
scholarships.
As part of the Training Week, Futura was also
held, which provided information about master
and doctorate degrees offered by both national
and international centres: public and private
universities, business schools, ongoing training
centres and professional associations. At times
of recession, these studies are looked upon as
good alternatives when it comes to acceding to
an increasingly competitive labour market with a
growing demand for skilled personnel.
Futura attracted recent graduates who wanted
to specialise, unemployed graduates, and active
professionals who sought better prospects.
Furthermore, visitors were given the opportunity
to take part in workshops on how to find employ-
ment and how to identify one’s own potential and
strong points, organised by the municipal bodies
Barcelona Activa, and to attend the company
Infojobs conference devoted to opportunities
offered by professions linked to the Internet.
Parallel to this, the publication
Món Empresarial
organised a seminar at which to debate society’s
power to change the economic situation. The
event was attended by representatives from
numerous Catalan professional associations,
authorities, universities and foundations.
