offices after the Show had come to a close.
These figures denote a sales increase of 50%
over those of the previous year.
The exhibiting firms strove to offer visitors the
best quality/price ratio, and all the cars were
thoroughly overhauled to near-perfect condi-
tion. The offer of at least one year’s warranty
and other advantages significantly boosted
sales, especially during the last weekend of the
show. It is reckoned that some 25,000 people
visited the event.
The Association very highly valued the results
of the show, stating that the Catalan second-
hand market has the capacity to hold two major
annual shows in Barcelona—Low Cost Motor
and the Salón Ocasión of Fira—, both specialis-
ing in nearly-new vehicles, as well as to organise
local events elsewhere during the year.

1.400
Nature:

Activities:
directors’ summit, conferences,
technical sessions, App Planet
Organiser:
GSMA in collaboration with the Fira
de Barcelona
Few industries enjoy the good health of the
mobile communications sector. The 2011 edition
of the Mobile World Congress revealed once
again that this is one of the strongest and most
innovative economic sectors with greatest
growth potential.
The over 1,400 firms present at the event con-
firmed that the mobile ecosystem has a prosper-
ous future ahead of it, also corroborated by the
fact that over 60,000 people visited the congress
as opposed o the 49,000 in 2010.
The ministerial GSMA programme also regis-
tered record figures having brought governmen-
tal delegations from 131 countries together
in Barcelona.
During the four days of the Congress, the execu-
tive directors of firms such as America Mobile,
AT & T, China Mobile, Cisco Systems, Erics-
son, Google, HTC, Intel, Microsoft, Nokia, NTT
DoCoMo, Qualcomm, RIM, Telefónica, Twitter,
Vodafone and Yahoo discussed the trends that
will define the mobile industry in the future.
As a supplement to the main programme, the
Mobile World Congress conferences addressed a
wide gamut of themes, ranging from applications
in the field of advertising to banking, health,
web capacity and next-generation technolo-
gies. The second edition of App Planet, an event
designed to bring together in a specific place all
the critical elements of the mobile applications
ecosystem, received over 12,000 developers and
hosted conferences organised by several firms,
prominent among which were Macworld Mobile,
aimed at Apple and OS programmers. Another
major App Planet attraction was the Mobile
Cloud Forum, which focused on applications
and services supplied directly from the Internet
through smartphones.
The Mobile World Congress is organised by
GSMA, the global association that represents
the interests of nearly 800 telephone operators
in 220 countries and of over 200 technology
and contents supply firms. Fira de Barcelona,
as one of GSMA’s partners, once more assumed
responsibility for on-line pre-authorisation, in
situ authorisation and access control while the
Congress was in progress, as well as for the
event’s organisation and logistic management,
for catering and for attending to the needs of
exhibitors and visitors alike.
Barcelona, MobileWorld Capital
Links between the mobile phone sector and
Barcelona became further strengthened in 2011:
GSMA designated the Catalan capital as Mobile
World Capital for the 2012-2018 period. This
project, the economic impact of which over these
six years is estimated at around 3,500 million
euros, rests on four pillars: the Mobile World
Congress and Mobile World Hub, which focus
above all on the industrial and business sectors,
and the Mobile World Centre and Mobile World
Festival, geared more towards society in general.
Barcelona thus became the world reference
point for mobile technology.
