addressed at the first FM&BS World Summit,
held at the Montjuïc Congress Hall. The event
forms part of the Fira's policy to launch new
exhibition products.
According to experts, externalising services
makes it possible to readapt firms to the current
market situation, vary operational costs and
concentrate efforts on firms’ core business,
thanks to which a saving of between 10 and 15%
may be attained in expenses as well as a contri-
bution made to increased productivity.
At the first FM&BS edition 25 speakers took
part, outstanding among whom was Keith
Alexander, architect and professor at Salford
University (Manchester, UK), who is regarded
as the ‘father’ of facility management; Helena
Ohlsson, international director of FM at the
Swedish firm IKEA; Terry Mills, vice-president
of the corporate clients sector of ISS Europe
(one of the world’s most important firms in this
sphere); and Salvador Torres, president of IFMA
España.
The event enjoyed the support of IFMA España,
one of the 18 international sections of the Inter-
national Facility Management Association-IFMA,
which serves as an umbrella organisation for all
this country’s professionals in the discipline.

The Mediterranean Dental Forum became
consolidated as a major business and knowl-
edge platform for professionals in the field of
dental hygiene. This edition brought together
over 10,000 specialists (including dental sur-
geons, hygienists, prosthodontists and speech
therapists), as well as students and suppliers,
most of whom came from Catalonia and the
Balearic Islands.
A prominent feature of the event was the scien-
tific programme, which included seminars and
conferences at which the latest developments
and challenges in the sector were discussed.
Developments presented included new digital
methods in the field of orthodontics, alternative
dental prosthesis manufacture methods and
novelties in aesthetic dentistry, CAD/CAM dental
systems, and digital radiography and implan-
tology, a speciality that has registered a great
demand in recent years.
The event also featured an exhibition area
in which products and technologies were
displayed linked to diagnosis, prevention,
treatment and dental hygiene, such as enamel
whiteners, pain mitigation methods and dental
implant systems.
As from the forthcoming edition, to be held
in 2013 at the Gran Via venue, the Mediter-
ranean Dental Forum will be organised
by Fira de Barcelona in close cooperation
with the Professional Dental Surgeons and
Stomatologists Association of Catalonia
(Col·legi d’Odontòlegs i Estomatòlegs de
Catalunya - COEC), and it will aim to enhance
its national leadership in the field and boost
its international character.

For the first time, Fira de Barcelona held
one of the world’s most important events in
the glass industry sector, at which the latest
advances were presented in the manufacture
and processing of his material. For over two
decades, this has been a benchmark event
not only in Europe but also in America and the
Middle East.
At this Barcelona edition, over one hundred
national and international exhibitors presented
new developments in the spheres of raw materi-
als, machinery and technology. The main
industrial and technical facilities and items
included processing plants; kilns; combustion
equipment; heat-resistant products; machines
for laboratory services and analysis equip-
ment; process control, technical assistance and
capacitating systems; and ‘keys-in-hand’ plant
construction services.
Besides the demonstrations, one of the most
interesting aspects of the event was the compre-
hensive programme of conferences, delivered by
representatives of different firms and by experts
in the sector.
The European Union is the world’s leading glass
producer and consumer, followed by the United
States and Japan. Spain is Europe’s fourth
most important producer. However, one of the
central issues addressed at Glassman was
access to the emerging markets of Asia and
Latin America, particularly Brazil, China and
Mexico, as well as to those of the Arab Emirates.
In this context, Glassman sought to foster the
establishment of numerous business contacts
with potential customers.

Geo-information,which is becoming increasingly
present in everyday activities, opens upmajor
business opportunities, above all for technological
firms. In this context,Globalgeo revealed the poten-
tial of an industry that is growing at an annual rate
of 35% in the US, and the latest developmentswere
exhibited in cartography, geographic information
systems,photogrammetry, teledetection, geodesy,
topographical surveying,navigation by satellite and
intelligent transport systems.
Among the most innovative products, several
geoservices were presented that make it pos-
sible to improve mobility in cities, optimise
resources, foster transparency in administrative
circles and manage civil defence emergency
action (applications by which to verify traffic
conditions in real time; geo-information systems
that locate the site of an accident on the map;
and new processing technologies of images
captured by radar or unmanned aircraft).
In this edition, at Globalgeo the scientific
programme was enhanced by the organisation
of around 150 seminars and by participation on
the part of over 250 national and international
specialists, like Sanjay Patel, in charge of Google
Geo in Europe. Other outstanding aspects were
the TIG-SIF Forum cycle of conferences, devoted to
geo-information applications in the urban sphere.
In the framework of the show, the 9th Interna-
tional Geomatics Week was held, which focused
on maps of the future: they will be in three
dimensions, with enhanced reality, and will
feature all kinds of information (texts, photos,
sounds and videos). World-renowned speakers
attended the event, such as Monika Sester, from
Hannover University, and Carmen Aguilera, of the
European GNSS Supervisory Authority.
