become a unique platform from which to foster
initiatives in emerging sectors, the ability to
boost transversality and cooperation, and the
creation of quality jobs.
Within the framework of Bizbarcelona over 1,800
meetings and 150 conferences and activities
were held and organised focusing on business
innovation, investment and creation. Among the
most outstanding activities were those linked
to funding, with the presence of 54 investment
funds and business angels who held almost
1,000 speed dating sessions with entrepreneurs.
Bizbarcelona was also the setting for the 3rd
Global Entrepreneurship Competition, in which
24 business plans from all over the world vied
with each other to secure funding for their
projects. The winner was Imprint Energy, an
American firm which submitted a project for
ultrafine printed batteries.
Likewise, several sessions were held on business
opportunities in the digital world, on the advantag-
es of franchises and on commercial networking.
The event enjoyed the support of the City Council

The most important world fair devoted to carbon
emissions and to finding solutions for climate
change held its second edition in Barcelona,
organised by the World Bank, the International
Emissions Trading Association (IETA) and Fira de
Barcelona.
Those attending the event were very mindful of
the coming Conference on Climate Change, to
be held in December in Durban, South Africa, as
well as of the world economic recession, which
enshrouded environmental policies with an aura
of uncertainty. In this context, and only one week
away from the preparatory meeting convened
in Bonn by the United Nations, the executive
secretary of the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Chris-
tiana Figueres, called on governments to commit
themselves to combating climate change.
Carbon Expo was attended by over 3,000 par-
ticipants from 110 countries and more than 240
exhibitors who presented new developments,
technologies, tendencies, projects and services.
Among those attending were top executives
from funding and juridical corporations, energy
and consultancy firms, political leaders and top
government executives, representatives of the
United Nations Framework Convention on Cli-
mate Change (UNFCCC), investment promotion
agencies and multilateral development organi-
sations, countries eligible for non-polluting
development projects, several NGOs, academic
institutions and think tanks.
Over 400 speakers, experts in climate change
policies, finances, development and carbon
markets, participated in 9 plenary sessions,
16 workshops and 50 parallel meetings.

Construmat
International Building Exhibition
16-21 MAY
GRAN VIA. 17TH EDITION
Surface area:
60.000 m
2
Exhibitors:
1.318
Nature:
professional
Activities:
Manifest Construmat, Casa
Barcelona, first Sustainable Thinking Forum,
Construmat Awards, National and International
Bricklayers’ Contest, National Parquet Layers’
Contest, Solar Decathlon Europe, first Hispano-
Brazilian Building Forum, Pintudecora, Calormat,
Stonemat, International Meeting Point, semi-
nars, B2B meetings, congresses, compensations
Besides submitting solutions to the current
recession, this new edition of Construmat
became the mouthpiece for the building sector’s
demands and proposals: over one hundred Span-
ish professional building associations subscribed
to the Construmat Manifesto, a decalogue calling
for support measures for the sector, an initiative
set in motion by the Fira’s Organising Committee.
Presentation of the Manifesto, which took
place at the Barcelona Circle of Economy a few
days before Construmat was officially opened,
constituted the preamble to an edition marked
by the sector’s need to devise formulae by which
to tackle the recession. To this end, Construmat
opted for innovation, rehabilitation and sustain-
ability as core themes and for internationalisa-
tion as a strategy.
In the field of innovation, the sixth edition of the
Casa Barcelona project was presented which, for
the first time in its history, made the transition
from theory to practice, since the City Council
had built a housing block in accordance with the
parameters proposed for Avinguda Vallcarca.
Refurbishment projects had their forums in the
Àgora, where several conferences were held; the
Laboratori, where products and procedures for
building refurbishment were presented; and the
Ruta, where all exhibitors specialising in this
building segment were grouped together.
With the collaboration of the Green Building
Council España association, the Fira organised a
number of activities by which to foster sustain-
able building, such as certifying construction
products and processes by means of the green
label (or Green Data Sheet), and the set of confer-
ences under the Green Data Forum epigraph.
Prominent in the field of internationalisation,
besides a programme for purchasers from differ-
ent countries, was the organisation of the first
Hispano-Brazilian Building Forum, at which
representatives of professional associations
from Brazil acquainted those attending with the
business opportunities offered by that country,
one of the so-called ‘emerging’ countries, and
established trade contacts with several exhibi-
tors. To all this we should add the announcement
that a forthcoming edition of Construmat will be
held in China, as an initiative on the part of the
Fira to introduce our small and medium-sized
firms into the Chinese market, one of the most
dynamic in the world.
Construmat also set out to make a specific
contribution to the sector’s recovery in a more
local context. To this end, the Day of the Distribu-
tor was held, at which wholesalers were able
to buy materials at special prices; furthermore,
on the last day the doors were opened to the
non-professional public to enable end users to
directly acquire products with which to carry out
domestic refurbishment work.
Over 127,500 people, of whom 9,000 were from
abroad, visited Construmat’s most international
edition: there were exhibitors from 35 countries
and purchasers and professionals of 58 different
nationalities were accredited.
