year strives to familiarise the public at large
with geology, particularly primary and secondary
school children, had two major protagonists:
On the one hand the prestigious palaeontolo-
gist Eudald Carbonell, famous for his role as
co-director of the excavations in the Sierra
de Atapuerca (Burgos) and for his activities
as an educator, made his debut as chairman
of the Show and participated actively in the
programme by imparting a conference on the
Homo antecessor.
Volcanology was another section that captured
great interest: for the first time lava samples
from the underwater eruption near El Hierro
were put on public display and workshops were
held on volcanic eruptions, co-organised with
Barcelona University, the Jaume Albera Institute
of Earth Sciences, of the Spanish National
Research Council, and the Geological Institute
of Catalonia.
The activities programme was completed
with sessions on mineral photography,
organised by the Catalan Mineralogical
Association; the workshop ‘After the traces
of dinosaurs’, organised by the Coll de Nargó
Dinosaur Museum; the Show’s traditional
drawing contest; the ‘Viu la Geologia’ area,
organised by the Barcelona University
Geology Faculty; and the ‘Els vidres d’or de
Veneçuela’ photograph exhibition.

The Children & Youth Festival, which Fira de
Barcelona has been organising since 1963 as
one of the major family recreational events dur-
ing the Christmas festivities, was attended by
around 150,000 children and adults, who were
able to choose from among over 150 sporting,
educational, cultural and solidary activities.
In this edition, sport assumed an especially
prominent role thanks to collaboration on the
part of several entities, such as the FC Barcelona
Foundation and the Barcelona Sports Institute,
run by the City Council. At the Barça stand, which
accommodated two soccer pitches, children
were taught values such as fair play and respect
for opponents. Themost fortunate were even
given the opportunity to play with Cesc Fàbregas,
Andreu Fontàs and Thiago Alcántara.
The little ones were also able to become
athletics champions: they competed at the
mini-stadium built to commemorate the 20th
anniversary of the Barcelona Olympics and the
holding, in 2012, of the World Junior Champion-
ships in Athletics. Likewise, the Port Aventura
skating rink, the horse-riding area, the cycling
and kart circuits and the Canal Panda ball ses-
sions were a resounding success.
The workshops where children learnt to prepare
healthy meals, cultivate an urban vegetable
garden, make puppets from recycled paper and
blow gigantic soap bubbles were also attended
by many. Furthermore, the Festival featured new
areas assigned to video games (which according
to experts may contribute to the socialisation
and intellectual development of children and
young people), an example of the event’s efforts
to adapt to new times.

Catalan crafts were the protagonist of the
products fair held with the purpose of creating
an exhibition space and stimulate direct sales to
the consumer, given the proximity of the Christ-
mas festivities.
The Fair was attended by over 120 exhibitors
from all over Catalonia, representing a variety of
sectors and metiers: fashion accessories, jewel-
lery, articles for the home, gift items and interior
decoration elements, among others.
Located in Pavilion Z-6, the event premises were
divided into three major areas: one devoted to
items for different parts of the house (kitchen,
table, bathroom); a second, focusing on the
realm of space, where visitors could by products
linked to interior decoration and household
furniture. Finally, the third area was given over
to personal accessories (fashion, jewellery,
costume jewellery...).
Addressed essentially to families, the Crafts
Fair organised a wide range of activities such as
children’s workshops (on frosted glass and on
working with pelts), live demonstrations of dif-
ferent metiers (ceramics, engraving on leather,
textiles, religious image making, costume jewel-
lery, basket weaving, etc.), as well as a projection
space showing audio-visuals on the subject
of Catalan crafts, craftspeople and associa-
tions and entities that work to provide quality
products, such as the Federació d’Associacions
d’Artesans d’Ofici de Catalunya and the Consorci
de Comerç, Artesania i Moda de Catalunya.

Under the motto ‘Sí que som capaços’ (Yes, we
are able), the Barcelona Congress Hall provided
the venue for the first Disablement and Jobs Fair,
the aim of which is to facilitate disabled people’s
transition into the labour market.
The event became a meeting point for firms
seeking permanent employees and profes-
sionals with some kind of disability who were
looking for work. The considerable number of
visitors became familiar with the type of profile
in greatest demand and were able to make direct
contact with companies, associations, founda-
tions and centres specialised in job hunting.
Furthermore, several round-table debates were
held for professionals on subjects related to
social or labour integration, to accessibility and
to corporate social responsibility. Workshops
were also organised on how to draw up a good
CV, how to be successful at interviews and how
to be a social entrepreneur.
Other major activities included a painting
exhibition by people with the Down syndrome,
a theatre piece performed in sign language and
a photograph exhibition on the theme of self-
improvement. Likewise, the Disablement and
Jobs Fair awards were given to several entities in
recognition of their social commitment, and the
Innova Discapacitat awards to the most innova-
