Comic strip enthusiasts filled Pavilion no. 8 on
Montjuïc, the venue for the 29th edition of the
International Comic Fair, an event that high-
lighted the dynamism of a discipline that goes
far beyond simple entertainment.
Thanks to its varied programme of activities, the
Comic Fair, which was visited by over 100,000
people, constituted a nucleus of recreational and
cultural interest. Visitors’ attention was focused
on several thematic exhibitions: those devoted to
zombies, the living dead that feature in films, tel-
evision series, books and comics; to the legend-
ary Tarzan; to the fascinating personality of cats;
and to the attempted coup d’état that took place
in Spain on February 23 1981, just 30 years ago,
with comic strips published by the magazines El
Jueves and El Víbora, which recall what occurred
that day at the House of Deputies.
A series of rock concerts, a video-game area and
encounters between professionals completed
the programme of an event that also took to the
streets, for the International Comic Fair organ-
ised nighttime film projections at a number of
venues in Barcelona and Badalona.
The long list of Spanish and foreign cartoonists
who attended the Fair attests to the high crea-
tive and artistic level of the present-day comic,
now regarded as the ‘ninth art’. Furthermore, and
as on previous occasions, the event served as a
point of contact and agreement between crea-
tors and publishers.

EIBTM, regarded as the most important world
event in its speciality, held one of its most suc-
cessful editions with the presence of visitors
and buyers from 90 countries, notably the United
States, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Russia,
Poland, Holland, China and Brazil.
Among those attending were travel agents, tour
operators, congress and convention centres,
hotel chains, service providers and international
event organisers from all over the world.
During the three days of the event the Fair was
visited by some 15,200 buyers and travel plan-
ners, and meetings took place there to present all
the new developments and trends in the sector
and to decide where and how future events would
be held. In this context, we highlight the fact that
around 65,000 trade rendezvous took place, a
figure that far surpasses that of 2010.
Prominent among new developments was the new
space ‘Experience for Future Events’, a foretaste of
what conferences andmeetings will probably be
like in forthcoming years and how technological
innovations will influence the sector.
For the first time China officially presented
its business tourism, congress and incentives
travel programme, a field with major growth
prospects in that country.
Other initiatives included the presentation of
a new international study of the sector, the
EIBTM Awards, several seminars, conferences,
networking events, workshops, demonstrations
and product promotions.
